ReadSafe Ratings

A Division of Texas Authors Museum

ReadSafe Ratings is a voluntary book content classification system developed by the Texas Authors Museum & Institute of History, Inc. in response to growing censorship and book bans across Texas and beyond. Designed by authors, for authors, the program provides clear, neutral ratings to help readers, parents, educators, and librarians make informed decisions—without restricting access or creativity. With simple letter-grade classifications and optional content labels, ReadSafe Ratings empowers authors to protect their work, support transparency, and ensure their stories stay where they belong: in the hands of readers.

Our Services

ReadSafe Ratings offers a voluntary, standardized content classification system for books—designed by authors, for authors. We provide clear, age-based rating labels (C, G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17), along with optional content indicators (e.g., explicit language, violence, sensitive topics) to help authors, librarians, educators, and readers make informed decisions. Our services include: • Book content evaluations conducted by trained reviewers • Digital and physical rating labels for marketing and packaging • A searchable online directory of rated books • Author education and marketing resources • Customizable content review packages ReadSafe Ratings is your proactive tool to protect your work, enhance transparency, and support continued access to books in a changing political landscape.

Introduction

In an era of growing book bans and legislative overreach, ReadSafe Ratings offers a proactive solution for authors, readers, and educators. This voluntary content rating system was developed to empower transparency, not restrict creativity. Much like rating systems used in film and music, ReadSafe Ratings helps communicate book content clearly—giving parents, librarians, and communities the tools they need to make informed choices, while defending an author’s right to be heard. Developed by the Texas Authors Museum & Institute of History, this program is about preserving access, encouraging dialogue, and keeping books where they belong: in readers’ hands

Mission Statement

The mission of ReadSafe Ratings is to protect the creative freedom of authors while empowering readers, librarians, and educators with transparent, voluntary book content ratings. By promoting clarity—not censorship—we aim to keep diverse stories accessible, support informed choice, and safeguard the literary voices of today and tomorrow.

Our Goal

The goal of ReadSafe Ratings is to protect authors' creative freedom while promoting informed readership. By offering a voluntary, transparent content classification system, we aim to reduce arbitrary book bans, support libraries and educators in making thoughtful selections, and ensure readers—especially young ones—have access to age-appropriate content without silencing diverse voices. Our mission is not to restrict stories, but to keep them accessible, honest, and safe for the communities they serve.
